They say your life flashes before your eyes right before you die. Finnick Hollins might be finding that out the hard way. With a gun pointed at the back of his head, he retraces his life starting as a child running cons with his father and ending in a stranger's house with a dead body at his feet and the chilling feel of cold steel pressed to his skull.

Thick as Thieves (Audible Audio Edition) Grant Fieldgrove F John Harvey Books

"Never buy something you can steal. My father used to tell me that all the time."

Crime is truly a family affair for Finnick Hollins (NOT Phil Collins!) He was raised in a den of thieves; taught to con, cheat and steal from an early age, and boy, does he ever make his daddy proud.

Finn enjoys a life of leisure, taking, and sometimes borrowing, what he needs from neighbors...only if they're NOT home, of course. Groceries, clothing, DVDs are all his for the taking, and the owners never seem to miss a few cans of soda or a t-shirt or two. But Finn is destined for bigger scams and before long his capers are making the papers, and he's been assigned a really lame nickname.

This was a fun read and the only reason it gets four instead of five stars is because the main character/narrator's astonishing arrogance annoyed the hell out of me. (If I want to hear a story from someone who thinks they're better than everyone else, I'll phone up my mother-on-law...)

Fieldgrove provides detailed instructions for breaking and entering, lock picking and starting a car without keys. He also describes the framework of several cons. If you're tempted to try one, apparently Mormons are extra gullible. (There was even one a couple years ago who thought he could be President.)

"My dad said scamming Mormons was easier than falling off a log.
...they'd be wise to remove that extra M in Mormon."

Thick as Thieves (Audible Audio Edition) Grant Fieldgrove F John Harvey Books Reviews

A great, humorous book that is told in the first person by a thief. The thief has been taught by the best His father! Seems it is a generational thing. The Banter, alone, is worth the read. Don't get me wrong; this is not just a book of humorous banter - It tells an intriguing story as well. You will love it!
I loved this book! The main character's snarky tone was so much fun and I actually learned something from his offhand FYI asides. Great story that keeps you guessing to the very end. So original! I hope to read more from this delightful author. Give it a try, it's totally worth your time!
Could not get past his disdain for their marks. Maybe I gave up too soon. Really unlikable protagonist.
I really, really like this book....the author knows his craft! The father-son relationship is carefully drawn. Too bad more children in real life aren't raised with the love and affection shown this child. But, raised to put 'cons' as the main focus in life is strange, but sure makes for a good book! It is very well written and makes enjoyable reading.
Grant Fieldgrove's book might have been subtitled " a con man's primer " .The story opens with our young hero (or crook if you wish ) standing in the middle of a room with a gun placed to his forehead . Through a series of flashbacks we see how a young man learns the tricks of his trade at his father's knee , the art of the con . We follow Finnick Hollin's career as he develops his skills as a conman and find out how and why he ends up in with a gun against his skull Intermixed in the narration , the readers is given a firsthand explanation how many cons are pulled off .Add a serious love interest for our hero , a dramatic showdown that involves more then one twist and turn and an unexpected ending and you have an excellent story . Hopefully the trio will strike again in a future work ( the author leaves this possibility open I will keep my fingers crossed ) . I highly recommend this book to all mystery fans .
I got this book for free after seeing it on the Buffett list. I did not know the author but the concept made me feel like it would be something I would enjoy. I did enjoy the book and even though I probably only laughed out loud one time while reading the book; the story was completely entertaining. 25 year old Finnick Hollins is a con man who has been schooled by his father (Alex Hollins) since age 5 about the ways of con-men. The story starts with Finnick being held at gun point as his father lies bleeding on the floor and Finnick recounts the life that got him to that point. Finnick is interesting in a possibly psychotic kind of way and he is witty and a good story teller. Finnick and his Father operate without conscience, but their relationship is sweet. In some ways the life of a con-man as described by Finnick is disturbing in that they act without remorse, live isolated and transient lives, never develop any real friendships or social interactions and always have to look over their shoulder. Nevertheless, the story is smart and engaging and I finished it in one day.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's the kind of tale that one would bundle up with on some freezing nights and hope to have it warm up the night and put a smile on your face at the end. This one sure did that for me. A well written and thoroughly entertaining book. Whether the numerous tricks and slips were realistic or not they were certainly never dull. Even though the subject matter might have inserted some tension into ones moral compass I suppose that the quality of this work may have served to override those questions; though not entirely, because surely honesty is still the best policy. So my one caution would probably be that I hope you next novel(s) will follow a more virtuous path while retaining the excellence of the writing.
