Mondo Hobbs, half Chickasaw and half African-American, is an ex-Yankee soldier who returns after the Civil War to settle in the Chickasaw Nation, who fought for the South. He establishes home between the Chickasaw Nation border and the land occupied by the raiding native Americans of the Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The U.S. Army and all Indian tribes around his settlement want him gone, but he survives and is soon joined by two ex-slaves from Texas, a beautiful female and an African giant who along with Mondo’s father and a Mexican captive that escapes the Kiowa tribe, fight to remain in Mondo’s compound. The most vicious attacks come from the KKK from Texas who are being paid by a rich Texas landowner who wants his ex-slave female back into his bed. Mondo, his father Bear Chaser, Maboola, the African giant, Savanah, the beautiful ex-slave and Skywalker, the Mexican ex-captive of the Kiowas, all fight to live and be free.

Very interesting and well written. Mr. Leonard should have included a map of the area.
Excellent story, historically accurate.
Would make a good movie like True
Grit.
The author has researched these subjects - post civil war times in northern Texas and southern Oklahoma, which includes Texas Rangers, Indians, half breeds, Freedmen, Ku Klux Klan, early settlers -.and presents them in a story worth reading. A Fight for Tolerance has a "true grit" flavor.
